Tamale Fundraiser!

Hi everyone! I wanted to invite anyone in the area (East Bay, California) to this delicious & fun fundraiser on Sunday, January 26, in the evening!

Pilar de Esperanza is a Mexican orphanage/group home that Bronwyn has been volunteering at and visiting for 19 years. Like every orphanage in Mexico, it's affiliated with a local church, but receives all its funding from donations, and is in need of help fixing up the van that transports the kids to school and paying for one of the older kids' college education.

Pilar is a wonderful place and the staff and kids act as a family. Many of the kids came from living on the streets, abandoned or abused, and they have the chance now to get education and grow up in a family setting.These are awesome kids to support!

The orphanage is located in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, just south of McAllen, Texas.

THREE PARTS:

1. TAMALE DINNER & RAFFLE!

Come eat a delicious tamale dinner!

Open to all ages, this dinner will feature a variety of tamales, (vegetarian available), beans, salad, beverages, and dessert! There will also be a raffle with many wonderful prizes. 5:30-7:30 on Sunday, Jan 26.

2. TAMALE MAKING CLASS!

Come learn to make tamales!

This one-hour class will provide all the ingredients and supplies you need to learn to make your own delicious homemade tamales! Come support an orphanage in Mexico while developing a new skill and taking home a dozen tamales for later (pork, chicken, and chili cheese available)! Supervised children 8 and up are welcome!

Open to all ages, this dinner will feature a variety of tamales, (vegetarian available), beans, salad, beverages, and dessert! There will also be a raffle with many wonderful prizes.

3. TAMALES TO GO!

Would you like a dozen delicious homemade tamales to take home and enjoy? Come pick up your choice of pork, chicken, chili cheese, or a variety pack! Easily frozen for later as well. Pickup will be from 4-8 pm at APC, 677 West Ranger Ave., Alameda, CA.Come eat a delicious tamale dinner!

Volunteers

I had some of the most overqualified volunteers ever in my third grade class. This may have had something to do with the fact that I shamelessly begged my friends to help in any way possible. I think there were a few friends who I asked to come as soon as I met them, before I was entirely sure of their names. Some of my volunteers included: -Someone with an MFA helping kids read -a PhD candidate in chemical engineering from Stanford helping with math -a PhD candidate in civil engineering from Cal helping with math -several PhD candidates in engineering from Cal teaching about construction (several years in a row) and helping with a field trip -my extremely talented brother bringing his drums several times -a friend from Pixar who got us tours three different years, once when they were no longer giving tours - and came to the class to sign the kids' toys from Cars . -a physical therapist (who I think has a masters') who helped the kids with reading -many athlet...

Update: 9/28/26: If you are reading this, the spoiler alert is that things got much harder for Jorge after this, and we kept in touch over the decades, even as he’s been incarcerated. A seventh-grade student rewrote Cinderella and I think it’s much better! The Dressmakers Once there was a girl named Cinderella whose mother died. Then her father married again, a woman who did not care for Cinderella. She only cared for her own daughters and her husband's fortune. Cinderella’s father made sure they were always fair to Cinderella but two years later, her father died. Cinderella was left alone with her stepmother and stepsisters. Cinderella was treated like a house maid but got no money for her work. She had to make the meals, iron the clothes and more. But on some things, like cleaning the windows and floor, Cinderella had to clean them five times per day or according to her stepmother, they will not shine as much as they should.
